The e Shram Card 2.0 is set to launch soon, aiming to include platform workers like gig and app-based workers. According to Union Minister Mandaviya, the new version of the scheme will make it easier for such workers to be registered on the portal. Shaik Salauddin of the Indian Federation of App-based Transport Workers (IFAT) explained that security benefits for workers will be linked to a unique ID. This ID will ensure access to all central and state welfare schemes and allow for the portability of benefits across states. Aggregator companies will be responsible for registering workers.
Since gig workers often work on multiple platforms, a unique ID will track their contributions, with deductions made per transaction. This system will help workers get social security without needing a traditional employer-employee relationship.
What is E Shram Card 2.0?
E Shram Card 2.0 is an upgraded version of the e-Shram portal, to be launched by Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya. The platform aims to be a โone-stop solutionโ for unorganized workers, providing them access to various social security schemes like health insurance and pensions. A special committee has been formed to create a framework for offering social security benefits to gig and platform workers, such as those working for delivery or ride-sharing platforms. Since these workers do not have a traditional employer-employee relationship, the government plans to assign them a unique ID.
This ID would track their work across platforms, and contributions toward benefits could be deducted per transaction or through a cess. Since its original launch in August 2021, the e-Shram portal has proven successful, helping millions of unorganized workers across India. This upgraded version reinforces the governmentโs commitment to supporting these workers by ensuring they have better access to welfare schemes.

About E Shram Card 2.0 Portal
The e-Shram Portal is designed to register unorganized workers and provide them with a Universal Account Number (UAN) to access social security benefits. The upgraded version, known as e-Shram 2.0, aims to better integrate data from various social welfare schemes, benefiting around 300 million unorganized workers in India. So far, 12 schemes from different Central Ministries and Departments have been linked, and more schemes will be added to the platform. The Ministry has asked aggregator companies to register platform workers on the e-Shram portal.
This will help generate unique IDs for each worker, providing crucial data on the number of platform workers in India, currently estimated at 20 million. These unique IDs will also be key to offering social security benefits, such as health insurance and pensions, specifically to gig and platform workers. The upgraded portal aims to make it easier to offer social protection to these workers once theyโre registered.
