PMAY Scheme Next Phase:- On September 13, 2024, Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan announced the launch of the next phase of the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), which aims to accelerate housing development across India. This new phase will commence with Prime Minister Narendra Modi distributing sanction letters to 20,000 beneficiaries in Jharkhand on September 15, 2024. The new phase will focus on constructing two crore houses in rural areas and one crore in urban areas. From 2014 to 2024, the government has sanctioned 2.95 lakh houses, of which 2.66 lakh had been completed, but acknowledged that many eligible families were left out.
The expanded PMAY phase will also include basic amenities such as drinking water, toilets, gas connections, and power supply. The total allocation for Jharkhand under the next phase is 1.13 lakh houses. However, the State government has currently cleared the process for only 20,000 beneficiaries.
About PMAY Scheme
The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) is a flagship initiative by the Government of India aimed at providing affordable housing to all citizens. Launched in 2015, PMAY targets both urban and rural areas, focusing on economically weaker sections (EWS), low-income groups (LIG), and middle-income groups (MIG). The scheme seeks to build 2 crore houses in rural areas and 1 crore in urban areas by 2022, although this target has been extended. Beneficiaries receive financial assistance to construct or purchase homes, which are equipped with essential amenities like water, sanitation, and electricity.
The scheme also incorporates features such as interest subsidies on home loans for the EWS and LIG categories. PMAY operates under two components: PMAY-U for urban areas and PMAY-G for rural areas, aiming to ensure that every family has access to a decent and secure home.
